There was a discreet bush telegraph between the cellars in our district. Strange rumours were circulating about the Führer: there was a theory, for example, that he had escaped abroad or barricaded himself into one of his fifteen headquarters to await the end of the war. And in fact the rumours were not entirely unjustified. The last time the German people had heard the Führer’s voice had been at the end of January, on the twelfth anniversary of his ascent to power; no-one had seen him in public since then, and only those who visited the Chancellery bunker could have stated definitely that he was in Berlin. We now know that until the very last moment the bunker was kept supplied with large reserves of food, while the populace, especially the people of Berlin, was literally dying of hunger. However, if anyone dared to point this out to the Fuhrer, he flew into an incandescent rage. We also know that, although the German Army was stretched to its absolute limit, Hitler continued to insist that the troops launch pointless attacks, and anyone who refused to obey orders faced execution. Considerable numbers of soldiers could be seen hanging from the city’s trees or lamp-posts, making the backdrop of Berlin even more ghostly than it was already.
